Don't dismiss the fusebox quite so soon.  Note that I said "fusebox"
rather than "fuses."  The S2 fusebox can be the source of a variety of
seemingly unrelated electrical failures, thanks to an interesting design.

Several circuits are supplied by one wire from the battery in some cases.
Electricity is supplied to adjacent fuse sockets through the ends of the
fuses themselves.  Corrosion can be a killer here.  Be sure all of your
sockets and the ends of your fuses--particularly the ends on the "supply
side," are clean.

I had a glitch involving my A/C and wipers a while back that was caused by
this. I found it only after taking apart half of the car's interior to
check out the switches and A/C relay--thanks to a tip from this list.
(Thanks again!)  You really don't want to do this if you don't have to.
