snip...

I was told by my mentor (I was 14 years old and working for summers in my
Uncles station in Portland, over 30 years ago) that the major purpose of oil
was actually to cool the bearings and parts that water could not get to.
Over the years this has proven to be true a couple of times.

Once I punched a hole in the MK I pan in the middle of a BC "Wetstorm".
Angry at myself I put a further 25 miles on the vehicle with no oil. Took
it down to the bearing cases later and there was no damage whatsoever...

My Toyota truck (OK, not much LBC there) runs hot. If I am down a quart of
oil I know it right now by the fact that the temp guage goes up a couple of
degrees. Put in the required amount of oil, down she goes.

I always used Castrol or Penzoil, don't always change it as regular as I
should, and have never had an oil related failure (Knock on wood).

Had another chum, would buy a car new never change the oil and drive it till
the engine quit. He got over 100,000 miles per engine. He gave me the math
figures, it was cheaper over the years he owned the car to change the engine
once than to change the oil, and at 100,000 or so miles he had a new engine.
Most of us still had the original engine, worn out, but maintained (We are
speaking of Datsuns here). Never would buy a car from him though! BTW, he
also never cleaned the ashtrays I think, so you know the type...

Me I change the oil regularly in the Jag and the Austins. The Toyota, well
what can I say!

Tom, waiting for the weekend and it is only Monday!
