Well I completed the install of the PBR Type 40 brake booster. No hiccups here other than relying on a one person brake bleeding gizmo. With one end of the tube tightly connected to the nipple and the other end, with a spring loaded ball stop arrangement set at it's lightest resistance in a jar, I depressed the brake pedal. I heard a pop, my foot went straight to the floor, and I heard the sound of a jet of brake fluid being sprayed everywhere but into the jar. A mad rush to clean up. Another gizmo bites the dust. I found a cheaper, and cleaner, option by giving one of my kids a chance to earn some extra pocket money by sitting in the Jag! I've only had a small drive since but what a difference. No more need to plan to stop three blocks ahead. I also connected up the vacuum hose from the intake manifold and reconnected the hose to get the scuttle servo operating. This still doesn't work so I'll have to start looking down the line to see what's up. At least the non return valve is working on the vac reservoir. The other job, overhauling the SU's, went better than expected. Again everything went reasonably according to plan. That is, instead of one hour to finish the job it took five. As I mentioned before, the linkages where the problem, combined of course with the tight fit under that hood (bonnet?). I had completed disassembled the linkages and cleaned/ replaced what I could. I found that a cup of coffee and some time spent working on the assembly order was well spent. I must admit during the reassemble I was thinking of what I could do when it didn't fire up. No need. Three hits of the "go" button and off she went. Not bad settings either. After using some spare vac hose to the ear to check the air ( I passed on the chance to buy an air flow indicator for $80 ) some minor adjustment to the mixture it was purring for the first time since I've had the car. I was able to bring the idle down to 600rpm ( it's an auto ) and all the roughness I'd been putting up with was a thing of the past. Ok now the crunch. The AED is leaking. I'm fairly certain that it is the fiber washer where the AED is attached to the housing coming from the front carby. I've used about as much force as I'd like to in tightening it. I know I'll have to pull it off but any clues on a replacement for the fiber washer? Another one, neoprene etc? There has always been some loss through this area but now its actually forming drips. The washer is new as were all the washers (including the aluminum ones). Which reminds me I had to buy two new diaphragms as well - at AUD$24.50 each. With the gasket kit, piston and diaphragm springs, needles the parts for overhaul has cost AUD$165.60. Oh another thing. In the archives I have seen a few good reports about using MSD Coils. Is there any value in this (ie the MSD) coil if you don't intend putting in the whole multi spark ignition system. I like the idea of getting the Jag to start in half a revolution instead of the two to three it currently takes. I've replaced the plugs, leads and distributor in the last three months. mikeH 3.8 S-Type Auto
