As I understand it, the last model year for the Series III XJ6 was
1987. However, "the Sovereign V12 and the Daimler Double Six range
continued unchanged into the 1988 season," according to Roger Hicks in
JAGUAR: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE WORLD'S MOST ELEGANT CAR (1989).
Seems I read somewhere that the V12 (5.3L) remained in Series III form for a
short time because the engine compartment in the new XJ40 was too small for it.

Interesting question, I've heard the same thing some say 87 and some say 86.
As near as I can figure out from checking all the home pages and other
resources it was 1987.

Please forvive my ignorance, but I need to know when the last series 3's were
made. I've seen 87's that look like 86's (at least from the outside), but more
often than not I'm reading that 86 was the last year for Series 3 cars. Did
they change the engine in 1987 and keep using the Series 3 body? thanks-
