SIII cruise

Thanks to Mark Revel, my cruise control now works perfectly. Mark's
solution proved to be the one that worked for my non-functioning cruise
control in my 82.5 xj6. Here is what I did following his suggestion:
I disconnected the throttle cable at the bellows, and removed the
holding pin from the bellows end plate (it is small and easily lost).
I carefully took the bellows rubber off the end plates, removed the
spring inside, and set them aside. Now the two solenoids are easily
accessible. I simply lubricated them LIBERALLY with Liquid Wrench (like
WD40, but has Teflon), then sealed the end plates to the bellows rubber by
putting a bead of black silicone seal into the groove that holds the
end plates (that is, the silicone was applied to the bellows rubber). I
then replaced the end plates and the spring, re-attached the throttle cable,
and took the car out on the highway. The cruise functioned PERFECTLY,
engaging immediately, disengaging instantaneously, resuming with a
touch of the console switch, and holding the speed within 1 - 2 mph of the
set speed uphill and down (over the Malahat highway for those of you
who know British Columbia, Canada). I have used it now for several hundred
miles and it works flawlessly. Once again, thanks Mark! And once again
we see that often faults and failures in these cars are not difficult
mechanical problems, but a matter of lubrication / maintenance. We have to
remember that the newest Series III xj6 is now 10 years old. Lubrication
dries out and needs to be replaced, and even those things not designed
for period lubrication such as these solenoids (and this goes especially
for the door lock mechanisms) can benefit from some attention. With an
XJ the simplest solution is often the best and cheapest. Fuses first, then
lubrication. Don't replace anything till these have been tried!
