Fwd: XJ6 S3 Door Latch/Lock Spring

I sent this message earlier, and I still need help. I have since located
ONE pin-hole in part of the latch mechanism which appears to be where ONE
end of this spring inserts. But, I cannot locate where the other end should go.

I also suspect the function of this spring is to maintain
pressure on a plate in the latch mechanism to press it in toward the
edge of the door (where the latch is mounted). Putting pressure on this
plate keeps the lock/unlock select plate from displacing (thus being rendered inoperative). It is a very complicated (and fragile) arrangement of hinged-plates and rods. I've already spent over 6 hours on this. Any tips would be welcome.

Subject: XJ6 S3 Door Latch/Lock Spring
X-Mailer: NETCOMplete v3.20, from NETCOM On-Line Communications, Inc.

A small 2 or 3 turn spring approximately 3/8" in diameter has become dislodged from the door catch/lock mechanism on the passenger front door.
I can't get to the mechanism to re-install let alone even see exactly where to install it. I've taken the door inside panel off (The door handle gave me a big problem). I've also taken the actual latch off to try to get to
it from that side, but I can find absolutely no way to access the mechanism
short of actually cutting part of the sheet metal away from on the inside of the door.

Can anyone offer advice? I really don't want to cut. Meanwhile, if I
reinstall the latch, I won't be able to open the door.

Thanks,
John A.
