Andrew asks: >How do you remove the tappet guide. I assume it is pressed in, but since it has been making its way out can it be pulled, or does the head have to come off? Then can a new guide be inserted with the head in the car? This happened to my '82 XJ6 when one of the bolts holding the stake-down plate backed out, allowing the plate to cock and snap off the second bolt. One tappet guide was able to walk out of its bore and get whack-whack-whacked by the cam. Same chiseled appearance that you mention. My machine shop removed the tappet guide by grinding a slot in the wall of the guide and then careful application of a BFH (big f****** hammer). I have the mangled tappet guide next to me as I write. Another more graceful way to remove them is with a puller, if the puller jaws allow it. I wouldn't recommend attempting removal of the guide in the car if you go the brute force method. If you have a puller with the right jaws, maybe you can do it. Installation in the car may be pretty difficult, read on. As for installation, the "proper" procedure is to freeze the tappet guide and heat the cylinder head, then drive the guide home. I'm not sure what the factory spec is on the fit, but my shop used about a 0.003" to 0.0035" press fit. Good luck. B.J. Kroppe - '82 XJ6
