Transmission InsulationI had no idea what else to call this one! ************* Hello all : Is there supposed to be foam rubber between the transmission and the body's transmission tunnel or was this the previous owners way of dealing with a problem? Puzzled in Connecticut Michael Ramsey 54XK140mc OTS I just pulled the cover off...no foam. Jim Warren '55 XK 140MC dhc Michael - I don't know about the XK's, and my 56/XK 140 DHC does not have the foam. My 67 XKE OTS has a molded foam that sits between the transmission and transmission tunnel. I assumed that it was placed there for noise suppression. When I first pulled it out it was covered with oil and dirt. I could not tell if it also had a moulded protective covering but at the time I was not sure I wanted something up there collecting water etc. I replaced the tunnel cover without the foam thinking I would find a new fresh piece but have not seen any moulded foam advertized for sale. Another reason for the foam could be as a dirt, moisture, or exhaust seal in the event that your rubber shifter boot fails (splits open) and stuff starts to get sucked into the cockpit because of the negative pressure. Regards; Andy Mike On mine, a fairly original 140 FHC, I found remnants of a rubber like materal. Not foam though, but a soft solid material, roughly 1/8" thick. Looks like a individual addition to stop drafts or leaks. Klaus Nielsen My '56 XK-140 had a fiberous material (possibly jute) on the underside of the transmission cover. Needless to say it was badly oil soaked and, therefore, I replaced it with some of that self adhesive rubber acoustic blanket material that is sold commercially. Mike Carpenter
