Flywheel Ring GearOne for the experts.... does anybody know of a supplier of ring gears that can be shrunk on to the XK 140 / 132 tooth flywheel please? - John Morgan Moss Motors. Check the xk-lovers archives, there was quite a bit of discussion on this subject a few months back. Check the clearance between flywheel teeth and starter teeth, should be about 1/8 inch. This is crucial, too much or too little will cause premature wear. Sometimes seems to be due to mixing and matching of substitute flywheels, bell housings, starters. -Rob Reilly If you have access to the club magazine from theJaguar Enthusiasts in UK check out what they wrote about 12-24 months on this topic. If I remember right, their tech guru Ken Jenkins addressed tooth profiles, counts and configuration of the ring gears for each XK model as well as the calamities which they have seen from picking the "wrong ones". Lyons' role on this earth was to make it more complicated....not simpler. - Klaus Nielsen Bill Tracy advertises, "We have ring gears for all flywheel you change it", $98.00 ea. - Dick Cavicke You can have your ring gears refurbished by a specialist company. They will typically shotblast the part, machine turn down, re-fit ring gears and then surface grind it down to the correct size. One company that I have used is Engine Machining Services - the leading Classis Jaguar engine remanufacturer. Costs are approx £148 plus VAT for this service. Tel: 01909 482649 and Fax: 01909 479033 or email on ems@insites.co.uk. Try also VSE who specialise in XK engines. They should provide this service. Visit the web site on: www.vsejaguar.co.uk/vse. - Dave Roche The flywheel ring gears have to be fitted by a machine shop usually because they will not just shrink in place that I am aware of. I have a couple of new ring gears (132 teeth) in stock for $69.95 plus shipping. - Hal Rogers H.D. Rogers & Sons Import Auto Specialists In relation to the query on ring gears and fitting to the flywheel, VSE in the UK (www.vse.co.uk/vse) can perform this service. Their costs are quite reasonable at £30 for the supply of the new ring gear and £15 to fit to the flywheel. So £45 Plus VAT and carriage all in. VSE would machine the old ring gear off, put the new ring gear in an oven to heat up and then knock onto the flywheel to fit. - Dave Roche
