Veglia vs. Smiths Instruments, Series III

Veglia vs. Smiths Instruments, Series III

Doug Dwyer asks:

What's the real skinny regarding when Smiths instruments were replaced by Veglia ? The information in the parts book is extremely confusing and does not seem to agree with Thorley. As I recall (without checking, now) Thornley indicates a cut and dry break point but the parts book lists different breaks for different markets and seems to indicate the USA had Smiths at least thru '85.... which I'm reasonably sure is not true.

From Gregory Andrachuk:

Doug: the switch to Veglia was made for the mid 82 model year for export cars (Stephen: I am ahead of you on this!). The UK cars used the Smiths gauges longer. The Smiths gauges clearly SAY Smiths on the face. My late 82, for example, and my 84 Sovereign (as well as your car, Doug) all have the Veglia instruments, made in England. Thorley, remember, speaks only of UK cars. He really has no accurate information on export cars, even when he mentions them.
