That's what the manual that came with my 85 said to do. The result.... buying a new switch. Must be a dash redesign sometime during the Series III production. On my 85 us spec VDP the switch lights can be found only by removing the switch cover plate (wood covered metal piece with 4 switches and the Cat). This is done by pulling off the two heating control knobs and removing the nuts holding the radio/heater/ac panel to the console. Pull out the radio/heater/ac panel with the radio attached. You should then be able to view the two screws that hold the switch panel in place. Remove then. The panel then can be removed. It is held by the two screws (bottom) and two metal tabs (top). There are two bulbs (one for each pair of switches). These are located between the switches themselves. Good luck Hope this helps.
