Oil Pressure Drops Suddenly to Zero

Oil Pressure Drops Suddenly to Zero

I notice that my oil pressure drops to 0 after long periods of time at 60mph or better, when exiting a freeway loop or when approaching a stop aggressively. The rest of the time it maintains 40 or so. I'm assuming a new oil pump is needed. Any other recommendations.

Thanks and I really appreciate this forum.

This one can really spoil a quick run. I remember the first time I came off the highway and braked very quickly to a stop and saw the oil pressure gauge hit bottom. By the time you've decided to turn off the engine and search the boot for a crying towel, it shoots back up to where it belongs.

The problem is that you're down about two quarts of oil. That will sound like a great amount to those unaware that the 6 cylinder takes 8 US quarts. If the oil level is low, a quick stop will cause the pick-up to starve as the oil rushes to the front of the pan. Just make a habit of checking the level each week.
