Recover the Console

Recover the Console

Kev wrote

I have to patch the center console box cover (prior to an interior spray). If anyone knows of the where-abouts of one, or where I might be able to order one, I would be greatly appreciative. Just a thought ... would it be easier to replace the vinyl and has anyone had success doing it?

Just completed this simple task that only took about two hours (mostly drying time.)

  1. Unscrew the two screws in the back that holds the lid and the two for the sliding catch.
  2. Take out the (6?) small screws that hold the black plastic onto the underside of the lid.
  3. Take off the old piece and use as a template for cutting the new. This piece was form fitted, however not glued, so it came right off in 1 big complete piece. I left an extra inch around mine, then cut after gluing.
  4. Spray adhesive that can be found in craft type stores is easy to use, and not messy. I coated the new naugahyde (fake leather (cheap)), put the foam lid on, pulled the sides up and paid extra attention to the corners to try to fold underneath nicely (I was perhaps too anal here, as you can't see under the lid once installed and closed).
  5. The spray doesn't need much time to setup, and you can reinstall even a little tacky since the black plastic plate and small screws will hold the new cover in place.

I replaced my console box lid with new vinyl. I removed the lid, unwrapped the old vinyl from the form, and found a good vinyl color match in a fabric store. My color is red. Keep the old vinyl piece because it's helpful to use as pattern for the new piece, and you can use it to help match your new color. Parts of it, where it was folded, show the unfaded color. I believe I used a contact cement for glue. You have to stretch and play with the vinyl to get it to fit around the corners neatly, but it's not hard.
