Removing the Center Console

Removing the Center Console

Sean McCormick

You're in luck, I just replaced same on my 85 XJ6. Your 86 should be the same.

  • Unscrew shifter knob
  • Remove screw from above window switches
  • Remove screw from forward end of ID plate
  • Carefully lever switch plate forward and pull up when back of switches clear top of console. Note: some connections may come loose from switches watch what goes where.
  • Heres the hard part. The cruise control switch is held down by a plastic retainer underneath the switch. It's U shaped, compress it and pull down.
  • Disconnect switch leads by following wire down left side of console till you find connector. Reaching up from below left side of side panel helps. Disconnect same.
  • Remove cruise switch
  • Remove shifter ID plate (underneath plate is a green plastic stip, mine was filthy, when replacing, clean and reglue it in place. Cleaned mine and did not reglue, it shifted allowing white light through, had to redo whole job!)
  • Reverse!!!
  • Warning: Replacing cruise control switch retainer can be a Bear! Have a cold one AND don't worry. Best of Luck
