Cold Start Injector

Cold Start Injector

T.R. Gregg

Thanks to help from this fine group I was able to solve my cold start problem.

All of the following done with a cold motor

  • I initially tried placing the gear shift in reverse to activate the fuel pump to pressurize the fuel rail. This did not change the hesitation in starting.
  • Following that I disconnected the electrical connector to the cold start fuel injector and clipped on my voltmeter. I then cranked the motor a couple of revolutions. The meter jumped briefly up to what appeared to be proper voltage.
  • I removed the cold start injector. With the fuel line still attached and the electrical connector in place I attached a plastic bag to the injector and cranked the motor... Nothing other than an ever-so-slight weep of fuel.
  • Conclusion: Replace cold start injector. A couple of hours and a $52 part and the gremlin is vaporized. Starts right up in the morning now.

Note: During the injector replacement rather than depressurize the fuel rail I used a small C-clamp and a couple of metal strips to pinch off the fuel line to the injector. I tapped the old injector shortly after removing and shook out a small amount of what appeared to be rust particles.
