Charging and Starting System: Routine Service

Charging and Starting System: Routine Service

Doug Dwyer

Contrary to urban myth there are no mysteries or particularly problematic aspects to your Series III's charging or starting sytem.

Many failures are caused simply by dirty or loose connections. See "No Start, No Crank" for a rundown on clean-up of the various grounds, cables, and connectors. Make an annual routine of cleaning and tightening all this stuff. You'll get to look forward to such activities due to the soothing and ann

Check the alternator (and all other belts) for correct tension and wearing, chunking, splitting, etc several times a year. A loose and slipping alternator belt can cause battery run down. A broken belt can really ruin your day.

Remove the battery a couple times each year and thoroughly clean the battery tray. This will help prevent rust-out in this area. Before reinstalling the battery a smear the area with a thin layer of light grease for some added protection.

If you have a battery with removable caps check the water once a month and top off, if needed, using distilled water.

The voltmeters used on these cars are notoriously inaccurate so verify suspicious readings with an independent meter before worrying yourself to pieces.

A "battery" warning lamp glaring at you is cause for immediate investigation. Assuming alternator failure, you'll have perhaps 15 minutes driving time before the battery gives it's all to the cause....then you're walkin'.
