Jaguar Majestik Wheel

Majestik Wheels

Kirby Palm purchased a set of "take-off" wheels (brand new, the original purchaser of the Jag just had to have wire wheels immediately) from a 1990 Vanden Plas.

At first blush, these wheels appear to be fairly standard XJ6 fare, but they are not; in fact, they are not very common at all.  The typical "Roulette" wheel found on an XJ6 has the slots recessed back into the wheel, giving it a stepped profile with the rim protruding outward from the ends of the spokes.  This wheel, which has been called the "Majestik" wheel, has a very smooth profile when viewed looking down the side of the car.

Also, the Roulette wheel comes with either of two types of plastic snap-on center covers,  a solid one or one with five holes.  The center cover on the Majestik wheel is a solid cast aluminum disk and is held to the wheel with a single off-center bolt.

Majestik wheels, like many other alloy Jaguar wheels, are actually painted a silvery gray color; there is no appearance of bare aluminum anywhere.  During the early 90's, it was fairly popular for Jaguar dealers to take these wheels off brand new cars on their lot, send them out to some shop and have them chrome plated, then reinstall them and pass the cost on to the customer.  While the quality of the chrome plating job varied considerably, it is almost always a disaster; chrome plating is not a really good idea on aluminum, and once it begins to flake off you have a real mess on your hands.  It would have been a much better idea to simply strip the paint off, polish the aluminum, and coat with a clear lacquer, but apparently that idea never occurred to them.

The lug nuts and hub are completely enclosed with this wheel.  Here is the view of the wheel center with the cover off, showing the various markings:

As you can see, the Jaguar part number for the wheel is CCC 2708, and it's 7" wide, 15" diameter with an offset of 33mm.  This makes it a half inch wider than the OEM wheel for Palm's '83, and nearly all of that difference is added to the inside relative to the mounting surface.  These wheels will just barely contact the front anti-sway bar at full steering lock, which means stick-on weights are preferred over clip-on -- the clip-ons will whack the anti-sway bar at full lock.

Here's what Palm's car looks like with these wheels:
