The book describes several ways of installing a GM alternator in the Jaguar XJ-S.  Kirby Palm opted for removing the air pump and installing a CS130 105-amp alternator in its place, thereby eliminating one fan belt.  The alternator chosen has the tensioner lug at 10 o'clock because it helps the threaded Jaguar tensioner rod line up with the bracket on the front of the right bank (top right in this picture).

The book describes other mounting methods which can use the "straight across" lugs (tensioner lug at 12 o'clock).

In this picture, it is apparent that the alternator sits up fairly high, just under the right side radiator hose, thermostat housing, and crossover pipe fitting.  For this reason, a relatively small GM alternator is needed -- a CS130 or an SI12.  The larger SI15/17 cannot be installed this way without making an adapter plate to relocate the air pump mounting bracket lower on the side of the engine.

What's not as apparent in this picture is the large gaping space under this alternator where the Lucas alternator originally mounted.

You can just make out the back end of the 16" GM electric fan at the right, which was installed in place of the original belt-driven fan -- see  ElecFan.html.  With these two changes, the front end of the V12 went from four V-belts to two.
