Tue, 04 Nov 1997 Fuel Pumps Mk IX >From: Phil Brake Subject: [Saloon-lovers] Fuel Pumps Mk IX > >I took the fuel pumps off my Mk IX because one was leaking and the other >just didn't seem to be working. I'm not really sure what to do with them >now. Any advice? >Phil Brake >'59 Mk IX Hi, From Channel IX... Before Channel IX was really born I had to replace one our IX's pumps - the plastic body moulding housing the outlet union (the rest of the unit is metal) was cracked and leaked like the proverbial. I tried araldite etc - no joy. I don't know if the plastic pump housing is original (Any clues Alistair/Larry?) I managed to get a refurbished pump - all metal but had to add new barrels/nipples to fit the unions, and discovered the old fuel lines (that grotty grotty plastic stuff which goes brittle) had to be ripped out. I replaced them with modern fuel-grade rubber/whatever. Not so neat underneath but it is very functional (and safer!). The new(er) pump did not fit the old holes on the chassis - I guess the pump was suited to another car. This pump was the one I have written about before - it gave up and needed a severe talking to. With the verbal abuse I also gave it heaps with WD40 - it gained a whole new lease of life with all the pins and springs free to move. If you wish to fiddle - take the end cover off the "not working one" and see if the all the linkages/springs are free to move. Then hook up your jump leads to the terminals - see if the pump will actually hum/click or whatever. Mine would activate one way only with power on - and then click back when power was switched off. That was when I tried the WD40 spray. Also one of the tiny thin pins supporting the main link had half fallen out - - it thus jammed the linkage completely. A judicious bit of soldering on the pin ends stopped it from jiggling out. KEEP the old pumps - you never know when you might need them! My "bitza' box has everything I have taken off the IX (and the II) kept for that rainy day when "that" bolt/nut screw is all you need to fix something... I also keep suppliers boxes which have codes/numbers on. The day I needed a fan belt I rummaged in the box and found the wrapper - got the code number and waltzed right into the garage picked off a new one from the rack - no hassles, no cursing. ------------------------------
