7.3 - Transmission Mount Replacement ( )

The transmission itself is normally free to move up and down within a limited range of travel. The mounting is above the top rear of the transmission and comprises a spring, various cups and washers, and a foam isolator. This is prone to wear, resulting in the transmission banging against the underbody on bumpy roads. There is also a travel limiter strap fitted, restricting the downward movement of the unit.

To replace the mount, first jack the car as high as you can to make room for working. Unbolt the exhaust downpipe and allow it to hang out of the way. Put a jack or stand under the body of the tranmission to hold it whilst the mount is remove.

Now put a jack under the mounting crossbrace, and undo the four fixing bolts. Gently lower the crossbrace on the jack until you can access the clip and pin of the retaining strap and remove them.

The crossbrace and mount assembly can now be removed, disassembled, cleaned and reassembled with new foam or rubber isolator.

Refit the travel limiter strap and associated clip, and then refit the crossbrace. Tighten securely, then remove the jacks and check for free movement of the transmission and that it appears to sit at the same height as previously.
