Phil Driscoll's 1966 S Type

The story was that the previous owner had purchased the car in 1985 and expended a lot of effort (and no small amount of money) in restoration work. He was no stranger to Jaguars and had restored an E type with his son, who still drives the car. In the same garage was a Mk II belonging to the son and awaiting restoration.

The S Type body had had all of the rust sorted out, lots of new steel and a bare metal respray. The gearbox, differential, cylinder head, carburettors and engine block had all been sent away to be professionaly restored. All the front and rear suspension parts had been stove enamelled. All springs and schock absorbers were new.

In short, a lot of the hard (and expensive) work had already been done. It seems that after about four years of work on the car, the previous owner had lost interest and so the car had stood in pieces in the garage for ten years. In the intervening period, he had unfortunately died, and his family were keen to see the car go to someone who would carry on the work and then use the car. I was that man!

Here's a picture of the car on the day the previous owner bought it in 1985. Notice that the car was dark green, although the original colour had been Golden Sand. The S Type on the day the previous owner bought it back in 1985 - click for larger picture
