England to South Africa to Turkey to India. There he put it on a boat and shipped it to San Francisco and then he drove it to Miami Fl. I only hope I can do justice to this fine car in my restoration work. I hope you have a grand and glorius birthday Norman. Lee

For me though, the immense pleasure and on-going joy derived from owning and using a machine which benefitted from your considered input over many years, is infinite and beyond the norm. I appreciate, on a personal level, the efforts from which I and many others have reaped rewards. We cannot repay the debt save for organising this raft of messages. Happy 80th Birthday Norman! I am new to the Jaguars, but I've loved them nearly all my life. After buying a real lemon (1985 XJ6) in 1993, I am now hooked. I maintain everything on it myself, to include rebuilding the engine and transmission. I am very proud of my Jag because everywhere I go, I get complments on it and it just feels great. While I may not know you personally, I'm sure that owning a Jag is knowing something about you and your contributions to a fine car. Thanks for everything. I hope you enjoy your birthday and that you will have many more to celebrate. Sincerely, Charles from Converse, Texas (San Antonio)

Happy 80th Birthday Norman! Thanks for attending our Concours in 1998, that was the show where Terry showed off the SS-90 that he had rebuilt, it was a real pleasure for me to chat with you and learn some Jaguar Company history from someone who was there when it all was happening. I was glad to get your autograph in one of my Jag books. I enjoy driving my ' 68 OTS "E" and it is a pleasure to rip around the mountains of AZ in the best body design of all time. The sound of the XK engine is a real joy to hear as One is pushed back into those great seats and play with the gears, Happy Birthday and thank you for your work. Please come back to Phoenix and speak again at one of our club meetings. Michael & Janice Goodwin

As long time Jaguar lovers, my wife Barbara & I would like to wish you the happiest of birthdays. We have owned 2 E-Types for over 25 years, and more recently an XJ-6. As the years go by, we come to a greater and greater appreciation of the outstanding work by you and the others back at Browns Lane some 40 years ago. One only has to drive an E-Type to recognize how far ahead you truly were. Happy 80th and many more!!

Dear Norman, Congratulations and a very happy 80th birthday! You are in part responsible for my love affair with Jaguars. I well remember your sensational high speed run at Jabbeke in the XK120 in 1953. I confess it was that young whipper-snapper, Stirling Moss's win at Dundrod in 1950 that is my first great Jaguar memory. (I grew up not far from him and am just a few years younger.) I was an avid supporter of Jaguar in the C-type and D-type days and was lucky enough to be at Le Mans for some of the epic races in the 50's, including one where, if I remember rightly, you yourself were one of the drivers.Jaguar's success owes so much to you. Thanks for the memories and for all your great work making the marque what it became.May you have many more happy years - and one day I hope I might get to shake your hand.Sincerely,Loudon Seth - Jaguar driver and proud

Happy 80th Birthday Norman! I first fell in love with the beauty, engineering and the mystique of the marque about 35 years ago when I was totally intrigued by a Mk1. Being a young bloke, my dad totally ruled out the idea of owning such an incredible performer, but the passion remained and was finally realised some 16 years ago with the acquisition of a Series 2 XJ6. Since then I have had the pleasure of owning a series 3, and an XJS HE and am currently driving an XJ40. Happy 80th Birthday Norman! Hope you have a great day and enjoy it as much as we enjoy our 1969 XKE-FHC. Thanks for your many contributions to Jaguar and motoring itself. Without the effort (and often courage) of men like you, the modern day motorist would not enjoy the perfomance and safety of twin cam engines, four wheel disc brakes and four wheel independent suspension. Thanks for a job well done! Steve

It's great to be able to wish you happy birthday Norman... I spend many happy hours with my Jags - one (an XJR) for work and one (XK150 DHC) for play, and often read about the early post-war days. My home is pretty close to the Jaguar factories in the Midlands so I see many of the new models before they are released... a few years ago you would probably have been driving some of them. I know you attend some of the Jaguar club functions and hope to meet you there sometime. I shall toast your birthday with a wee dram of Laphroaig 15 year old malt... Best wishes - Trevor Law

Happy 80th Birthday Norman! So!! You are the guy I can blame for my fascination with Jaguars. After restoring a Series 1 1/2 OTS and a Series II 2+2 for my wife, we now also have two XJS's. I have had to retire just to take care of all these cars. Gosh though they are gorgeous and I never take any of them out but I get many complements. Thanks for all your efforts with Jaguar and have a great birthday!!

Happy 80th Birthday Norman! I grew up in London GB and when I was a kid, I deeply admired the shape and styling of Jaguar cars-still do. I'm lucky enough to own a MK VII, an XK 140 and an XJC They still need lots of attention yet to get them back to original condition and by the time I'm your age, I might have achieved that goal! Congratulations on a meaningful life, well spent and thanks for contributing to the enrichment of the lives of so many people like me who cannot create as you have done but can appreciate the results of your work. I hope you enjoy many more happy years with your hands on the wheel, Happy Birhtday! Regards, John Morgan, Vancouver Canada

Happy 80th Birthday Norman! In 1956, while in high school, I bought a magazine featuring the race cars of the world. The most attractive to me was the Jaguar, and I've been in love with them ever since. My E-Type restoration isn't finished yet, so I haven't been able to personally enjoy the results of your work with Jaguar, but I'm certainly looking forward to it! Happy 80th Birthday Norman! Many happy, and HEALTHY returns.... at least a day driving a Jag is a good one. I have an XK140 SE - Fixed Head Coupe, I brought it from the New York City area to my retirement home in Las Vegas, Nevada. Always a rather hot car in the summer, the desert climate here only adds to the warmth in the cockpit...not to mention the engine temperature. When it is necessary to lose a few pounds, I take it for a drive and sweat it off! Again, Happy 80th!

I know Jaguar would not have been the same without your fine efforts. My ownership of the marquee spans from the XK120 through the XJ-S with a couple of XJ sedans as family transport. Your touch and attention to detail shows throughout these cars, and is indeed why these cars are so special. Happy 80th Birthday Norman! You have been one of my heroes since I was a "wee lad" and it is so wonderful to still see you active and being made a "fuss of" in Jaguar events all around the world. This is exactly how it should be! In 1969 my uncle got an E-type. I was 9 at the time but I spent almost every Saturday morning for the next 5 years cleaning and polishing it. Ever since then I wanted an E of my own really badly and spent countless hours reading every book about them (and of course reading your name and all of your adventures!). My dream came true 3 years ago and my wife and children will tell you I have not been the same since. It is something I will cherish forever and I want to thank you for your role in making this car the classic that it is and for helping to bring so much joy to so many people. Have a wonderful birthday Norman! Take care, be good and thanks again for changing my life! Very best regards, Mark Riley (Tallahassee, Florida, Tel: 850 668 7759) ps If you are in Tallahassee ever please feel free to drop by! By the way, my wife makes a mean "Yorkshire pudding!" pps I recently took a colleague at work for a spin in my car. The result is that he is this very weekend off to Jacksonville to pick up his first Jaguar (S-type). Another has now experienced the magic that you helped create!

I would LOVE to send a message to Norman....he was our guest here in Tasmania a couple of years back and he and I spent a very interesting couple of hours standing in a field in pouring rain watching the Targa Tasmania contestants go by....at least 6 Jaguars in their too! Norman could tell how each contestant was going to fare on a tricky corner merely by listening to the sound of their engine as they approached. He was uncannily right almost every time! He also gave our club a very interesting after dinner talk. If you could forward my very best wishes to Norman for his 80th, I would appreciate it. We owe him a great deal, not only for his work with Jaguar, but for his service with No.2 Group, Bomber Command RAF. There are not many of his kind that survived, and our debt can never be repaid. Happy 80th Birthday Norman! A newcomer to this Jaguar community/addiction, I nonetheless realize the rich history and recognize the genius of so many of the people involved. It would be remiss if I did not take an opportunity to thank you for your contributions on this very special occasion, your 8th decade. If you've plans of retiring soon, can I have your job? Sadly, our Jaguar, a 1967 420 RHD, is still in need of some work...namely 7 years worth, and I can't stand it any longer! I "allowed" my husband to buy MY dream car foolishly believing a few minor adjustments were all that were needed, and I would be cruising and gathering tickets in no time. You inspire me. Maybe when I am 80 it will be finished and I too will get to race it. Today I am 32. This gives my husband a deadline. But back to the point...Happy Birthday. Happy 80th Birthday Norman! God Bless you on your 80th...age is an attitude not a chronological measurement...You, Sir are measured by the joy you bring to others...people like myself and other Jaguar "lovers" who enjoy the comradship of the unique automibile and the folks that have been part of it.... Today, the 31st of July, is the anniversary of my birthday, but you are 19 years my senior..and I only hope that I can travel as far... Regards, Rick

Happy 80th Birthday Norman! I don't know you, until a few minutes ago I hadn't even heard of you, and you certainly don't know me, but after reading about how much you have contributed to the history and development of my favourite car manufacturer, I am compelled to send you birthday greetings. If I am lucky enough to make it to 80 (23 to go!), I would wish that I could look back on my life and know that I had helped as many people as you have to find pleasure in their lives. If I could be there I would definitely buy you a Guiness! Many Happy Returns! and may there be many more birthdays! Doug Corby.

Happy 80th Birthday Norman! My personal love affair with Jaguars began in the spring of 1965, at the age of 17, with a 56 XK140 MC rdstr that was being sent to a junkyard. I personally rebuilt every piece on the car and drove it as my only form of transport throughout my college years, up until I was called to service in the Army during the Vietnam war. All total, I owned the 140 for 18 years. Of all the E-types, Sedans and XJs I have owned my personal favorite has, and I am sure will always be, the 140. You efforts in the development of the early XKs and E-types helped to bring something special to all of us who have owned and appreciated these wonderful automobiles. A Heart Felt Happy Birthday!!!

The club movement in Perth has been steadily growing and we have just recently purchased additional clubrooms next to the existing building to cater for projected future growth. I am sure you can remember the turn out of members to meet you and hear your tales at our club meeting? The movement is more the richer with people like yourself who give so much time in retirement to enthusiasts with a common passion. Many happy returns Norman and may you have many more! As a Jaguar lover I have always had a passion for a series 1 - 1 1/2 roadster however the $ cost of these in Australia has presented a real problem (the wife and kids wanted to eat - how unthoughtful!). Having owned many 2nd hand saloons my current stable includes 1 420G and 3 mark 9's. No doubt your passion has influenced many others as did my dads (who by the way bore some likness to your handsome self), which was why I had no chance of avoiding the jag bug I guess. Best Wishes on your birthday! I've driven/raced an XK120 for the last 12 years and have often wished for the opportunity to thank those who built and developed this crude, honest and altogether wonderful beast! Thanks to you (and to all the others who contributed in so many different ways) for allowing me so much pleasure! I hope someday to be able to thank you in person (or perhaps more appropriately, to share a pint or two), but for now, please accept my e-best wishes for a happy 80th year!

Happy 80th Birthday Norman! My late grandfather bought two Jaguars (MKVII and XK120) in 1952, when he was 60 years old. After that he drove over 30 years, some times with XK120 with then 3 grandsons, two sitting in the co-drivers seat and one above the transmission tunnel. Many times the speed was still over 100 mph. We have very fond memories about those cruises. (We grandsons also have his old MK VII). So you should have many, many enjoyable years to drive with Jaguars.

The late Rivers-Fletcher told me many stories about you, I'm not sure if any of them were true but I sure hope that they were... Graham Gauld (ex EE) speaks highly of you also. You know, your life has made mine a little better. It's hard to say that about most people today. Thanks Mr. Dewis. Great article in Motor Sport by the way. Happy Birthday and many many more. Ron

Imports were forbiden then locally and that only made my jaguar appetite greater, I have then owned 7 Jaguars and currently 2, both are from your most active period, a Jaguar Xk140 and a series 1 E-type I have read all I could about Jaguars and incidentally about you. It certainly seems like your experiences with Jaguar in the Fifties were an enormous amount of fun, as well as a tremendous amount of work, I am certain. Be assured that there are those of us interested in Jaguar who would sacrifice our wives and children to have been in your shoes! The overwhelming success of Jaguar, both past and present, obviously is due in part to your diligent efforts and for that, I am grateful, as arecountless Jaguar enthusiasts around the world. Happy 80th Birthday Norman! Very best wishes on your 80th year!! As a long time Jaguar enthusiast, my thanks for all of your wonderful work with Jaguar cars over the years---they are the greatest!! We are fortunate to have had several XK's and E-types since the late 1950's and just the sight of one still brings tremendous pleasure. Our XK 150 is still going strong 42 years after it's production! At one time--back in 1961 actually, we owned a 120 fixed head coupe that I had purchased in Long Beach, California, U.S.A. It has recently turned up in Australia where it is being restored. After the history of the car was checked, it turns out that this was the first left hand drive 120 coupe built, and was the show car used around Europe at the time to introduce the model in 1951. You may have seen this particular car at the factory back then! Being a part of the development and the evolution of the marque must have been a tremendously satisfying persuit for you. Keep well, and again, our best wishes go to you on a very special day! Regards, Roger and Irene Phinney, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Best wishes on your birthday, Mr. Dewis! I hope this day finds you well. As a long-time admirer of the Jaguar marque, I want to personally thank you for your contributions to the timeless beauty and performance of such beautiful cars. I have never met you nor others who made Jaguars a timeless winner, but each time I watch a video, read any of numerous books on the marque, or turn a bolt on my car, I know that your drive and dedication, and that of others you knew worked with, shaped what is still a legend in motor racing and production car history. I recently purchased a MkII to enjoy, and in the same month was given a rather sorrowful MkI that needs plenty of attention, and I'm proud to be part of a group that is dedicated to the continued driving enjoyment of Jaguar cars across the world. Happy 80th!!! I've had great fun with Jaguars of all sorts, from XK120's through the XJ6's, and it was you and your mates who made it all possible.I hope the following (a tiny bit of the report I made to Jag-lovers when I took our race team's 1960 MkII racer to drivers school) brings back some pleasant memories for you: "...Before long, your confidence is back, everything becomes right again and soon you are in transition to this wonderful time-without-time where life reduces down to a 3-second stream-of-consciousness window of total focus on setting up this line just right, late brake, late apex under acceleration, wind it out, shift-up, wind it out, brake, brake HARDER, downshift, pushing into the next corner hotter, accelerating out faster, passing that Alfa, dropping the cars off your tail then getting smoked by a someone even faster, trusting the Jag, pushing it hard and probing your limits before, suddenly it's over, the checkered's out and you're pulling into the pits with muscles trembling and a huge grin on your face..."

Happy 80th Birthday Norman! I have always been an admirer of the e-type...from my youngest days. I built not one but two of the 1/8th scale model cars as a young boy. I LOVED that car...working doors, windows that rolled up and down, bonnet that opened, revealing a detailed engine. Imagine my delight when I was taking my younger son to a golf tournament two years ago..when I saw HER...and she was "For Sale". I couldn't drop my son off and get back quickly enough. And yes, she was in my price range. It's not a show car, the model I've got, but it's plenty to see my name on the title of a Jaguar XKE, 1966, 4.2 ,2+2, opal. blue. Thanks for your work and dedication, it has and will continue to provide enjoyment to the lucky few for years to come! Happy Birthday! Sincerely, Dale Robbins Piqua, Ohio, USA

Happy 80th Birthday Norman! Wonder how many messages you'll get from women Jag lovers? I'm on my second, my husband being a 'foreign car' hater. But he can't resist getting behind the wheel of my '89 XJ-S and seeing how fast the V-12 will go from 0-100. And he admires the way the car holds the road - I imagine we have you to thank for a lot of that. This is my second Jaguar; I owned a '73 E-Type roadster, also a V-12, for 15 years before sellng it for four times the purchase price! As soon as I'd let it go I was sorry and set out to replace it with another collectible Jag. My bright red kitty-cat coupe is just such a car, I love it and will never let it go! Thank you for helping to bring such style into our lives! May you have many, many more happy birthdays.

Happy 80th Birthday Norman! Norman Have you been involved in this 12 cylinder thing? I've been thinking on the 12 and whether it's symbolic of anything. Are twelve cylinders 12 calender months it took to design, 2 hours of design per cylinder with a sleepless night? In honor of twelve women? The number of pints 1 person can consume in a good run in a London Pub?- I began my adventure with Jaguar Car in the fall of 1999 with a 1989 XJS V12. This car has been more than a car. Happy 80th Birthday Norman! Dear Norman, I have owned Jags for 42 years and this is the first birthday card I have ever sent to someone connected with Jaguar. Both Judith and I could not be happier it is for your 80th birthday. Keep that engine revving and thank you for all of your efforts on behalf of Jaguar. That little badge of mine from my old 150 now has more meaning than ever no that I know for sure that you were one of the drivers in 1955. Have a wonderful, joyous birthday celebration and many more to come. Allan & Judith 69 2+2

Happy 80th, Mr. Dewis, may there be many more in your future! I imagine that being a test driver for Jaguars was both exciting and tedious--and a very special skill very few would have been qualified to do. Congratualtions and well done for being among those few who could have done the job. When I read Porter's account of the building of the E-Type, I'm amazed at your notes on the prototypes--the car clearly would have been nowhere near as good without you involved. I'll think of you when driving my '61. I trust that years since you left Jaguars have been good ones and that they'll continue to be so. Happy birthday!

Norman - There are several jobs I can picture as being a 'dream job', test driver for Jaguar ranks right up there! I appreciate all the work you must have done to make the E-type the great-handling driver's car that it is. Nothing compares to the sound and feel of driving that car on a crisp, clear day, with the wind in one's hair (top down, of course!). Without Jaguar and people like you, I would never have had that experience. I and my 1969 E-type OTS thank you! And of course --------- Happy 80th Birthday!

Happy 80th Birthday Norman! My wife & I have many happy memories of our D-engined 1962 E-type that we use to drive to work each morning on the LA freeways - usually with flames shooting out of the hood louvres from the backfiring Webers and water geyshers shooting up through the floor pans! Wishing you a very happy birthday and many returns, Norman. It's good to see there are still some of the boys left from the good old days. My grandfather, Joe Thompson, was in experimental at Jaguar in the 50's and 60's. He was also a mechanic on the Le Mans team and took part in the high speed testing of LWK 707.
