My own recollection of full throttle change from second to top is that it happened at about 6,000 rpm without much drama. Without doubt the most memorable driving experience I can recall was at the completion of 1300 km when I was approaching Sydney from Lithgow late one evening. From the time I climbed up the steep hill out of the town until I reached Bilpin I was almost entirely in second gear. The road is fast, narrow with sweeping bends, steep hills and the cliff faces come down immediately beside the road. My speed for most of the time was around 80 mph getting up to 105 on the short staights. The snarl of the V12 at 5000 revs up to 6700 was glorious, the cliffs amplifying and reflecting the sound through the open window - that engine really does take on a totally different character when it is worked hard and there can be few better sounds anywhere. (The Porsche 3.0 and 3.3 engines have the same sound transformation.) Don't believe anyone who tells you the V12 is best at quiet luxury transport - it was designed origianlly as a racing engine with no thought to road use and at 6500rpm you can believe it! My BW 12 box would hold the selected gear as high as you wanted to rev it - saw 6700 many times. Regards Peter Smith
