I didn't want to report on my cooling system adventures until I had
gathered enough data, but I think I know enough now to comment on this
topic.

I just did a rod-out and changed from 190 to 180 degree t-stats.
Preliminary results are that the car runs cooler when it is cool, but
temperatures are the same as with the 190 when conditions are hotter.  This
leads me to believe that the thermostats are fully open well before the
time the engine reaches questionable temperatures.

Ergo, going through all these convolutions to open the thermostats is
unnecessary. They are already open.  If they aren't, the car isn't warm
enough to worry about.
