Let the man speak who has kept his foot on the > floor until 2nd becomes 3rd. I've done it all, but my memory is foggy; I've had a 5-speed for some time now. I seem to recall one really miserable drive where I had the shifter in 2 and was doing something around 100 mph but was varying throttle (as one is apt to do, since there aren't many straight roads around here). What made it miserable was that it would stay in 2nd as long as it was floored, but as soon as you backed off a hair it would upshift -- and then downshift when you floored it again. It was driving me nuts. I also did straight runs up to 130 or so, but I don't recall letting the tranny shift by itself. I seem to recall somewhere that the GM400 will stay in 2nd forever under certain conditions. Still, just bumping the shifter to D when the tach approaches the nether regions works for me. > What is that shift like?? Nowhere near as impressive as the 1-2. The most impressive part is the reminder for the passenger -- who is turning white over there -- that we just made it into top gear! With a 2.88:1 final drive, tall tires, and a 6500 RPM redline, 2nd gear will get you going really fast indeed. > I've never gotten that far; just > not willing to stretch the speed limit that much, I guess.
