Keep in mind that your mechanic is used to dealing with dowager empress
type Jaguar owners who are looking for smooth & quiet, and don't really
care about handling. Believe me, putting in polyurethane rack bushings is
the single biggest improvement you can make to an XJS. The steering
reflexes become lightning quick. If it made the ride any harsher, I never
noticed it.

You have badly perished steering rack bushings. The heat from the V12 plus
the stresses of everryday driving gives the stock rack bushings a life span
of about 40,000 miles. There is no excuse for a mechanic who is familiar
with Jaguars to not be aware of the rack bushing problem. If he wants to
argue the merits of rubber vs polyurethane, that's one thing, but to not
replace them at all is inexcuseable.

Why would you NOT change your mechanic? You can order the bushings from
John's cars or Terry's Jaguar Parts and have the dealer install them if you
can't get your guy to do it.
