The AC didn't work when I got the car over 2
years ago. Not a big deal; I don't usually drive the car when it's real
hot or raining. The compressor runs (clutch engages) but no cold
air. One of the first things I did when I got the car was to pull the
clutch fuse so the compressor wouldn't be running all the time without
freon. Recently, someone on the list said this was a bad idea because the
lubricant is not being circulated and that this would ruin the seals. Doesn't
seem to be the case for me.
Last weekend I was
able to get my hands on some real R12. I tightened the bolt on the
back of the compressor (O ring seals) and added freon until I had about 24 PSI
on the low side. Got lots and lots of cold air. Over one week so far
and it still works great. I don't know how long it will last before the
freon leaks out, but it sure is a load of my mind knowing that's the only
problem. Thanks to all of you who contributed your
experiences!
