[xj-s] Re: Engine Compartment cooling et al.

Greetings,

I had some experience with my 79 450sl that may be relevant. A couple of
years ago when faced with replacing a bad fan clutch, I opted to go with
dual electric fans with a single thermostat that I wired to the battery.
The fans with thermostat were about 200 at pep boys, the MB dealer wanted
320 for the fan clutch...

Anyway, I didn't notice any real difference in cooling capacity on the road
but it did run slightly cooler at idle, but overall there was no big
difference. i did notice that for about 20 minutes after shutting the car
off, the fans would cycle on and off. This had no apparent detrimental
effect to my battery.

Recently I replaced most of the components in my a/c system, did a R134
retrofit (which works great btw) and decided to put a flex fan with a
shroud on the car. Well the car runs way cooler on the road with the flex
fan...sounds like a hoover vacuum cleaner, which is a bit to get used
to...but I feel this is good for the car and the a/c effectiveness.
However, at idle the flex fan with the a/c running (the sl has a 12 inch
aux fan in front of the condenser as well) tends to heat up, which I have
yet to figure out to solve.

One major thing I have noticed without the electric fans is that the car
water temp gauge rises about 20-30 degrees in about 5 minutes or so after
shutdown, and that the car is noticeably harder to start (vapor lock)
without the electric fans for the next half hour or so after shutdown.
Apparently the fan cycling after shutdown did wonders for eliminating any
hard start difficulties.

Is this something that could help the xj-s?

FWIW

Jonathan
