[xj-s] Gasoline smell

My 89 always smelled a little both in  the trunk and inside for the past 7
years. But now, with the hotter weather ( I guess ) it's a more definitive
symptom. I am aware of the numerous postings on this in the last 10-12
months, the majority of the cases were due to rusted/ leaky tanks. This car
does not appear to suffer from rust problems, so short of  exploratory
disassembly, I dont know where to start for a definitive diagnosis..
Your practical advice, once again, is greatly appreciated.
A little concerned.
