[xj-s] Newbie's First Foray! (Grin)

Hey Hey, everyone,

This is Rory from Dallas. Haven't posted in awhile... everyone posts such
great content that I'm busy just reading all of the information. It's great!

Just wanted to let you all know that I recently purchased the Haynes
book, and enjoy it. I rank myself as a technical idiot on cars... I've always
understood the easy stuff, but never went deeper. This weekend, I
grabbed the books, and actually got under my car with a flashlight and
looked at the Haynes pictures and figured out what was what on my car!
It was great! I'd always been afraid of car parts and such, but, after
reading Kirby's XJ-S book, the Haynes book, and these posts, I feel much
better about attempting to work on my car, instead of letting the shop do
everything.

I did go out and spend the money on the best Husky (Home Depot) socket
set (both US and metric). Believe me, that was a great investment! This
weekend, I tried my first "mini-project" on my '88 XJ-S. Took the
windshield wiper assembly/motor area apart, and cleaned and replaced
the broken/brittle plastic/rubber pieces. It only cost me $1.41 in parts, from
Home Depot, which does show that you can effectively repair these cars
inexpensively. Yes, it was a simple job, but it was fun. My next job is to
clean and inspect my fuel pump/system, and de-grease the entire engine
and bottom of the car.

Rory,
