Throttle open = less vacuum, throttle closed = more vacuum. Yes, the vacuum for a given throttle position varies somewhat according to RPM, but the difference is less than you'd think. Basically, the idea with the vacuum advance is to advance the timing at small throttle opening for complete burning, retard it at large throttle openings to prevent detonation ("pinging"). - Jan The Gum Tree Garage, where oil and beer mix just fine...
