There has been a lot of traffic about the two springs in the distributor. At low to medium revs, the advance curve is controlled by the weaker ( read thinner gauge) spring. This will actually be more or less linear. As the engine gets to higher revs, the other, heavier spring comes into play, and flattenes out the top of the curve. At rest the heavier spring will not be in doing anything at all, and will in fact seem loose. This is perfectly normal, and has been the same for all the assorted old Triunphs, Nortons & c that my existence has been cursed with. It is a cheap & effective way of approximating a complex curve. Some Harleys (with the electronic black box, at least) don't bother with a curve at all, they just seem to "flip-flop" from full retard to full advance. Y'rs &c. John Warr "...a gentleman who was generally spoken of as having nothing a-year, paid quaterly."
