[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] Re: [xj-s] Hess&Eisenhardt Fuel pump (s)
Well, I'm the guy that has two of these H&E jags, and I luv em. Both my cars register 3/4, when the tank is full. The fuel light comes on and the gauges read empty when I still have about 8 galls in the tank. The fuel light just uses the info from the senders. I always fill up at this point. Maybe the designers of this tank knew the car does not like to run on an empty tank. The lower the fuel tank, the more prone you are to vapor lock (no heat sink from a large pool of fuel in the tank). I have not suffered vapor lock to date because I keep lots of fuel in the tank. Recently removed all the covers/ carpet etc. from the forward tank, behind the seats. After a run in the hot weather (95 deg), I touch the tank and find it is bl__dy hot. The fuel recirculating thru the engine bay (fuel cooler not working), results in very hot fuel. I am sure most other regular jag owners will find a similar result. The only difference for the Hess, is we have two fuel pumps. Anyway I find it pretty scary (Hot explosive fuel only a foot behind my seat). Also note this fuel tank is totally enclosed in its own compartment (no cooling) inside the car. My GM cars all have the fuel tank under the floor, hence air cooled by the air passing under the car. I think the location of the fuel tank is a major contributor to the vapor lock problem on all xjs models. Comments appreciated. Any ideas for fuel tank cooling? Pretty ironic that we all complain of the crappy British design. I thought the Americans designed this installation, ha ha? P.S. I didn't get any takers on me buying a pint for info on a duel fan installation with shroud included. I guess we still do not have a good solution for the most important subject of engine bay cooling. Therefore I shall do a little digging around at the auto stores, before I decide on the final mod. If a job is woth doing, its worth doing right. Dave Johnson Mr Brit in Denver Two Hess Conv. (His and Hers) >Yeah, my H&E gas gauge is like the stock market: sometimes up, sometimes down, >always moving and seldom based on reality. Question, on the H&E, is the low >gas light equally unreliable, or is it separately plumbed and so perhaps more >accurate? - --Steve '88 h&E
