[xj-s] Cylinder liners

Hello everyone,

I agree, I am going to listen to as much input as possible before I attempt
anything. I was interested in Kirby's idea, but I need a little
clarification. Kirby, is it at all possible to "get to" the sealing lip
from above? With the other liners in? Do I have to remove the oil pan and
sandwich plate? Not a real problem, I just don't want to do it for
"nothing". If I do remove the above mentioned parts can I then easily get
to
this sealing lip? I also question why this liner moved. I did not have
water/oil mix problem. As of right now what I did was to plug the water
input and fill the block with water. It's still there this morning. I
understand the coolant is under 15 lbs... of pressure while running, so this
isn't a true test, just the only thing I could think of to try.

What are the properties of Hylomar? Does it remain soft after 14 years? I
have never touched the bottom end and I'm pretty sure no one else has been
in there. Here's one last thing told to me by service manager. He said the
sealant stays soft and when you take heads off a fairly new engine, the
liners "rise" a little out of the block (unless they are stuck) When you
torque down the heads it pushes the liners down and it compresses the
sealant. Has anyone ever removed the heads on a newer engine and noticed
this phenomenon? Is it possible that this liner isn't "stuck" like the
other ones? If there were something always wrong with this one (explaining
why it's loose), shouldn't it have been leaking all along?

I'm just trying to decide whether I'm about to fix something that ain't
broke.

Thanks all

Dave
