[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] [xj-s] distrib. o/h my exper.
Great to hear all about these springs. I'm new to the group, have an '85 coupe. I've owned it for 9 years. Its been good to me. didn't pass CA emission test, almost but just over the line. I had just gotten on line here just before the trip to the SMOG check station. OK, Kirby, thanks for distributor tip. Got your book downloaded. Yes, distributor was frozen. Ok, I was questioning the springs as well! No mention of them as "peculiar" anywhere, so I'm glad to hear the last few comments on springs. Mine are much like those mentioned. One light one, one heavy, light one contacts, heavy one doesn't!!! When taking it apart I didn't think to notice, but I know the heavy one was contacting both pins, but not stretched. Mind you it was frozen. Of course took off springs and eventually freed the rotor shaft. When putting it back together, I noticed so much travel, before contact of the heavy spring was made. This spring is about .075 wire diameter, it "don't" stretch easily, if at all one would guess (like you wouldn't be able to twist the rotor without concern, if this baby was in tension at rest). Anyway I scribed just the outside of the extended weights at the contact point, removed the heavy spring and again extended the weights until reaching stops, the difference is only about the width of the scribe. Now the second thing that I'd like to have seen in the book and that is about setting up the timing. OK, it's done at 3k, but to what reading with a strobe underneath. (That's a trip, engine at 3k you under this thing with a strobe light!!!!) My numbers (Calif) are: w/o vacuum attached. 750 rpm 0 2000 10 3000 22 w/vacuum 750 rpm 12 2000 22 3000 >28 (off scale) So I guess the big question is: I'm using a spring which closely matches the other light one in performance, and the above numbers are the result. They seem to match the Haynes book fairly. So before I take the distributor off for the third time (all due to the mystery of the heavy spring), what's the thinking here?
