I believe he's talking about the return line, which is a push on hose.
the most likely explaination is the hose is old and *rock* hard. It
has molded itself to the swedge on the nipple of the pump, and he can
not get the now non-deformable hose to move over this swedge. The correct
answer is, of course, to cut the hose off with a knife (slitting lengthwise
along the nipple), and replace it.
