Re: XJ6 with mad Jag disease - Cured!

Good morning group

This is another of those Jag-Lovers list success stories. Having
been rather upset by the sudden demise of some of the electrical
systems (wipers, AC and indicators not working) in my 75XJ6, I
appealed to the list for help last week.

True to the nature of this splendid list, I received help within the
day. Even more heart-warming was the moral support that I received.

Well, over the weekend, armed with my workshop repair manual,
prinouts of e-mail and Kirby and Jim's books, I decided to venture
forth and put to battle with Lucas, prince of darkness.

First thing that I realised immedeately is that the electronics
course that was part of the second year Physics curriculum at
university, does not at all equip one with the neccesary skills to
decipher an electrical wiring diagram. So, to actually trace
the electrical "bug" in my car, would be next to impossible.

Next best thing was to follow the advice of Tom Wagner and Larry Lee
ie. clean the fuse box connectors and inspect the back of the fuse
box itself. What I saw horrified me. The previous owner must have
done some adventurous rewiring, because the wires from behind one of
the fuses were CUT off. This was presumedly put somewhere else.

Unfortunately this did not help a whole lot. Al the problems were
still there and the heat outside is getting close to 35 C ....

It was approximately at this stage that I noticed this brown wire with
one of those famous Lucas connectors dangling in front of me. You
know, as if to say, "look at me, do think I hang around here for my
good health". This prompted me to look around to find a spot were I
could stick this in. This was fortunately not difficult, under the
dashboard, to the right (RHD) of the fuse box was an elctrical
component, the name of which I could not found in the manual, with
one missing connector. Bingo! Started the car, Aircon blows fine and
cold, wipers are wiping and indicators are indicating (well except
for the fact that the fog lights stil comes on when indicating).

So, my Jag is once again willing and able to roam the streets of
Bloemfontein. Thanks to Tom Wagner, Larry Lee and Roger Langley for
the hints and technical help, and thanks to Dave Arnold and Ian
Johnson for the moral support.

Now if only, I could figure out what the PO had done...

exhaust)
