If you already have a "smart level" that you believe will be sensitive enough for what you are trying to measure, why not make an X measurement and then rotate the shaft 90 degrees for a "Z" measurement. Smaller increments of rotation with an accurate device might help you zero in on a possible misalignment. If a vibration is coming from a weight imbalance you'll see no change in the angle measurements. There are some diagnositic tools being used in General Aviation that could tell you if your out of balance and perhaps give you a solution (weight and location). If you contact your local FBO for General Aviation and talk to their lead mechanic about how he balances props, you may find some help. Good luck... Tom '85 XJS '73 XKE
