Great theory -- except for those of us who have taken fuel tank sending units out and found them to consist of a simple wirewound variable resistor with a normal wiper, and nothing about them sealed from the environment inside the gas tank! The area ABOVE the level of the fuel within the tank must be really explosive -- a mixture of air and fuel vapors -- and it's hard to imagine how a variable wirewound pot wouldn't make tiny sparks as it bounces from turn to turn, but nobody seems concerned at all about it. If it works in a fuel tank, I see no reason why you couldn't take the exact same apparatus and mount it within a crankcase.
