With XJ40s it is rather common for the Champion plugs they use to blow out the ceramic. This is the fifth or sixth I've heard of. As long as you stop when you start hearing the horrendous misfire you should be ok. One guy kept going and effectively had a blowtorch going under the hood, not pretty. If you take a look at the ceramic on the top section of the plug where it meets the metal body you will see after 15-30K miles that there is a brown stain. This is combustion leakby and is a good sign of how old the plugs are. An XJ40 should have the plugs changed somewhere around every 15K miles, regardless of the brand.
