I ordered disks from 2 suppliers and neither came with the iron ring. I returned
the first thinking it was an error but kept the second assuming that the old
type was not available. Good question about sound dampening. I have no idea
whether it will make a difference. My concern was whether the thermal
properties might differ to the point of causing uneven braking. I assume that
if the surface were good, then the initial application of brakes would be fine. My concern was that one type or the other might retain heat very differently. I
didn't realize that the band was only a ring. I thought that the disks were
made as a sandwich of three pieces. It they aren't a sandwich then it
wouldn't likely matter. After all, the rears do something like 30% of
braking. Right? At about $45, the cost is not so bad, but they are a pain to
replace if the calipers must be removed. Repeating my question. Must they,
or is there enough space when the pads are removed? I'll bet that the
calipers must be removed but I am hoping not.
It just dawned on me that you may be wondering why I don't know the
answer from experience. The car is on jack stands while I await the return
of lug nuts that are being chrome plated. If I NEED to replace the other disk,
then I'd just as soon do it now to take my mind off not being able to drive
the car. Don't tell me that I was sold the wrong disk.
Thanks in advance.
