As for the relief valves, their only function is to limit pressure by opening when it reaches a set point (32 psi/2at on pre-HE V12s). I gather the HE and later have a more complex system, but on the pre-HE, the two valves operate in parallel, so if one fails to open, the other takes over. I guess this is why I'd expect "failure to close" as the common failure mode: if one of mine failed to open, I'd probably never notice, as the other has sufficient capacity for the whole system. The intermittent problem mentioned by Carl appears to have been caused by a (single) valve that failed to open but mostly could be induced to do so by pressure pulsations. - Jan
