My wife's Volvo has an idiot light for the oil level which can only be observed before starting the engine. Goes like this: Insert key, turn to position 2, wait two seconds. If light comes on and goes out again, all is well. If light comes on and stays on, oil level is too low. If light does not come on, bulb is blown ;-) Then turn key to position 3 to start the engine. The above is not mandatory - you can turn the key straight to 3 for a quick start. All the manual says about it is that this way "you waste an opportunity for checking the oil level". That gets over the problem of trying to figure out the level in a running engine. Looks simple enough to me. Why can't Jaguar design something like it ?
