There had been some recollection about motorcycles having oil level gauges.
My 1981 Seca 750 Yamaha had such a device.  The sender worked on the same
principle as one for fuel, but was a vertical piston float in its own cylinder
in the sump.  I suspect a hinged affair would be fragile.  The float worked a
simple switch rather than a potentiometer, triggering a low level light.

Since a 'cycle is not as prone to oil surging to oneside or another, I imagine
this was a feasible solution.  Most auto systems I have read about operate at 
start-up only, probably to avoid giving the driver cardiac arrest when 
cornering.
