Hi, I've heard so many arguments for and against synthetic oils I'm not going to pass comment. There is however some interesting stuff about this, and additives such as 'slick50' on a web site, 'The Skeptics Dictionary', can't remember the URL, you'll need to do a search. I made up my own mind with a simple test. Take a piece of round ber, grind the end flat (not with an angle grinder, polish it), and a ground flat plate. Fix them in a vertical drill, put one drop of oil on the plate, start the drill and press the bar onto the plate. See how long it takes for them to sieze. This only tests the lubrication properties of course not the cleansing additives etc. added. It's surprising how well some of the cheap oils do. If your not going to use the manufacturers recommended oils, you could consider diesel engine oils, good for low revs and very high pressures, or motorcycle oils, good for very high revs. I have a free source of very expensive oil so I don't need to worry. If your filter gets plugged at all then there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with your engine. The main reason for changing them is that the filters tend to break down and let larger particles through. Normally your oil pressure switch comes after your filter so if the bypass filter hangs open it makes no difference. Under normal conditions the bypass is to allow cold thick oil to circulate without squeezing through the filter. I've never used a semi-synthetic but I've only heard bad things about them. I've noticed a good number of posts seeming to suggest a Jag engine is getting worn around 100,000 miles. Do many people find this? Personally I'd never buy another if it showed any problems at that mileage. I expect a recent engine, well cared for to last at least 300,000 with no problems. I don't count valve shims and such like as problems, just long term maintenance. My series3 had well over 300,000 on the clock and had been pretty abused by the PO. My XJ40 has nearly 200,000 and shows no sign of any problems at all. Any comments from any-one on expected engine life? Cheers, Richard Follow-Ups:
