Subject: Prince of Darkness pulls a classic ??

 Hi jag-lovers,

Just had my whole air-con/dash disassembled in my series 2 xj6 so
that the evaporator at the back could be removed, and a crack in
the inlet nipple could be welded up. This was an enormous job. Since
it was all apart, I had them tidy up the whole wiring harness. All fuses
have now been replaced by modern spade fuses, and the old fuse panel
was removed, and two nice looking 6 fuse boxes were fused together
to replace it. Some of the fuse slots now have spade-type circuit
breakers instead of fuses. The whole thing was done great, and the
job ended up taking the shop just over 40 hours to do the work, and
to convert the system to the new air-con gas. The work included
cleaning and repairing the evaporator, heater matrix, fans etc.,
as well as doing repair work to the metal casing that had rusted in
places. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I also had the system
modified to close off the fresh air intakes in the plenum box, so
that my air-con only works on recirculated air, and does not let
outside air (full of exhaust fumes) into the car.

I now have a totally rebuilt climate control system, and completely
overhauled wiring system inside the car. The differences in the
electricals have been very noticeable.

Yesterday however something funny happened, and I don't know whether
it is the prince of darkness who still has some components hidden in
some places in the car, or whether the shop may have screwed up a little.
It has been raining like mad in Sydney for a few days. I got home
last night, turned off the ignition, and the wipers and radio
were still running. I had not yet turned off my headlights also.
I pressed my foot on the brake pedal, and the damn radio turned off .
I took my foot off the pedal and it came back on again. Each time I
did it, the lights dimmed a little. Obviously there is a short in
there somewhere, maybe caused by the mega-rain we are having.

I started the engine again, then turned it off, and everything was
normal again....I have not been able to duplicate the problem...almost
like a poltergeist had inhabited my car for a brief few minutes.

Anyone know where I should start looking for the source of this ?
The car does have a towbar, but the wiring is not all properly
connected. Maybe water got into the boot and some wires were sitting
in a puddle. Will check tonight. Any other possible causes ??
