[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] Re: XJ40 Engine ? Noise
Hi Danny, [sorry about the wrong 'topic' - sorted now] My car had a tapping noise which I also could not find. Similar rate to yours. It tended to be most noticable inside the car when idling - not when driving. Both hot and cold, but sometimes not noticable. Similar to yours ? I noticed a thumping sort of feel when I put my hand on the high pressure hoses at the front of the car, which started me thinking. I also had a problem with the low brake pressure warning coming on when the engine was idling and the brakes were repeatedly applied - stop / start driving in a jam, say. The only common factor in all this seemed to be the hig pressure pump on the front of the engine. My friendly Jag. storeman was able to tell me that he could not remember when one was last needed, however one of the mechanics commented that the early ones were prone to giving up - mine should have been changed already. Since I have all the receipts, I checked this out - negative, probabily due to the low milage / one retired owner. A replacement costs #................ [don't ask]. I located a [cheap] secondhand one and did the swap. Problems solved ! Being a curious sort of chap, I took the old pump to bits [noted it was a different make], and found two of the three pistons worn. Not much, but it is a very high pressure pump. Reasons for the wear ? Don't really know, but have a couple of theories ;- 1. The rear struts gave up and were replaced a couple years before I got the car, so it might have been run dry. I know the owner had a severe brake problem ! 2. Poor quality material - hence change of supplier and history of failures, which the mechcanic remembered. Try putting your hand on the pipes first, in case your problem is differnt. Let me know how you get on.
