Michael, I know you are one of the most knowledgeable mechanics on the list and I didn't mean to bad mouth this one. I did say that I am sure he is perfectly competent and I don't think he meant to do any harm. I wasn't really aggravated about the cruise control; although I do like and use it, it isn't that big a deal. The tappet noise, by all accounts, is a big deal. With all the information about the XK engine and the problem it has with tappet guides, I really believe that a so-called Jaguar specialist should pay particular attention to the possibility that the guides have come loose, considering the damage that can result. I took the car back to him twice and actually left it overnight once trying to get him to take the problem seriously. (I knew when I bought the car that it was not one to ignore mystery noises.) After all that, for him to tell me to ignore it, I think was perilously bad advice. I was really trying to establish a relationship with him and it took some nerve, or whatever, to go to another one. If I hadn't, I could be looking at $thousands$, as you know. Which would mean I would have scrapped the car and none of us want that. Do you still think I'm being unreasonable? PS Michael, I know from your tech files that you have some experience with San Francisco techs. If he is a friend of yours, well, perhaps he could learn from you. Follow-Ups:
