RE: Vibration in XJR

Steve,

Have you checked the RPM at which the vibration occurs? Try duplicating in 3rd gear (this will be at a lower speed). Might be engine / exhaust related.

Other possibility is front wheel bearing and or bushings, steering rack. That's where mine is coming from. Of course, mine's much older (and nowhere near as fast -- damn!)

Subject: Vibration in XJR

Hello everyone. I've just come across this list, and am looking
forward to seeing the posts. It has also struck me that someone might
care to comment on a problem I have with my 6-month old XJR which the
dealer seems to be having a little trouble getting to the bottom of. I
live in Sydney, Australia.

First of all, I love my XJR. Even had an XK8 for a weekend, and
thought the XJR seemed a little faster off the mark, if anything. So I
was pleasantly surprised to find that I still wanted to get behind the
wheel of the XJR!

My problem revolves around a general vibration at speed. This happens
between 110 and 120kph (of course, just the speed you sit at on
Australian freeways). It's not a wheel-balance type of vibration. It
comes right through the chassis, and sets everything in the car
vibrating. It's also fairly slight, but very annoying.

My excellent dealer (New Rowley Motors) has looked at various things.
Bad wheels and wheel balance have been ruled out. Initially, I had a
vibration when taking off from rest too, but that has been fixed by
adjusting the tailshaft angle, and fitting a new A-frame (and
something else which escapes me). Apparently a guy from England was
out with a special gizmo and laptop which they fitted to track down
the vibrations - hence the new parts and adjustments. However, the
high-speed vibration continues, and my dealer and Jaguar will be
looking at it again in a couple of weeks.

I have heard that this type of problem is not unheard of with XJRs.
Can anyone shed any light and/or experiences? Thanks.

Steve Dawson
