XJ-S Executive Summary

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink: I can include all sorts of helpful information but I can't make you read it. Many XJ-S owners may consider this book reference material, and not bother to look through it until they need to work on something or spend some money.

Hey, it's up to you; it's your car, your time, and your money. However, I highly suggest you read this book!

At a minimum I recommend reading the following sections:

• Suggestions for ordering manuals and catalogues.
• Comments regarding hot shutdowns.
• Discussion of the centrifugal advance mechanism seizure (on pre-Marelli ignition cars).
• Re-read the discussion of centrifugal advance mechanism seizure.
• If you still haven't overhauled the distributor by this point, re-read the discussion of centrifugal advance mechanism seizure again. In fact, keep re-reading it until it sinks in. Am I getting through yet?
• Relocation of the ignition amplifier (on pre-1983 models).
• The plastic cooling fan cracking.
• Soft shifts (automatic transmission).
• ABS brake testing (on cars so equipped).
• Trailing arm mount rust problems.
• Brake fluid level switch problems.
• Suggestion to replace the steering rack bushings.

Jaguars are not known as drive-it-and-forget-it cars, they demand a certain amount of awareness on the part of the owner, and reading this book from cover-to-cover will go a long way to making the owner aware of the car -- possibly saving loads of $$$ in the future -- as well as making Jaguar ownership a more pleasant experience.
